Our story

Worksheet on a desk

We were surprised to find that schools and colleges used a lot of writing to give work and information to young people. Sometimes the writing was very difficult to read.

We showed some members of staff ways of using simple words and pictures to share information. It is easier for some young people to understand writing when it has pictures or images.

Some schools and colleges already used easy ways to share information. They asked each young person to decide what kind of information was best for them – pictures, symbols, photographs, talking or writing.

This allowed young people to feel better:

  • they could be in control
  • they could run meetings and make plans.

We say:

  • Everyone should have the information they need in a way that is easy to understand.
